Getcher Team Here

Great item from David Pinto about the act of selling off players. While I'm not convinced that selling off players wouldn't occasionally be used by an owner to pad their wallets, I am convinced that in this era, baseball management is all about money -- specifically contracts. Contracts are traded, free agents signed, money in and money out.

To disallow a team that's on the skids from selling off a player who's worth $5M and putting that money toward rebuilding, signing draft picks and free agents, is ridiculous. Teams shouldn't be forced to eat prospects (or faux prospects) or position players they don't want in order to unload expensive, sought-after talent. They should be able to get cash. But thanks to Bud Selig for once again protecting the integrity of the game through a knee-jerk reaction that doesn't take into account its long-term effects.
