Don’t know if anybody paid attention to the opening montage before CBS’s NFL coverage on Sunday. It’s your typical The-Majesty-of-Pro-Football video collage of quick hits, amazing catches, and drunken fans cheering like a bloodthirsty Parisian mob circa the 1780s. Interspersed amidst all this footage are shots of assorted American Football Conference stars turning to look right at the camera.
Including Bill Romanowski. The prone-to-episodes-of-rage Raider linebacker crosses his arms and glowers at the camera during his brief appearance in the opening montage.
I have no way of knowing if this was filmed before or after recent events, but I can’t imagine any montage featuring Romanowski is a good idea, unless your goal is to highlight the less media-genic aspects of the NFL.
“Watch the NFL on CBS,” Romo might as well be saying. “Or I’ll shatter your orbital bone.”
For the last word on Romanowski and football commentators’ inexplicable tendency to heap praise upon his sociopathic shoulders, we turn to Tim Keown and his must-read weekly column:
At some point, the statute of limitations on this fable has to be up: Any announcer who publicly praises Bill Romanowski’s leadership ability should have to give equal time to Marcus Williams, the teammate whose eye socket was broken and career possibly finished by The Inspirational Romo.
