I watched the game last night on my new gigantic TV set, bought with some of my ill-gotten gains from a ludicrously large tax refund.
Which allowed me to see, in gigantic relief, the might of Neifi Perez (currently the Giants’ only big-league Xeixi, since Xeixi Cruz is in Fresno where he belongs). As my friend, colleague, fellow curling fan, and (in a surprise to me) fellow baseball blogger Marty Cortinas puts it, “it’s safe to say that if Neifi Perez gets four hits a game, the Giants will be going places.”
Seriously, if Neifi Perez can become even an average offensive player this year while being the starting shortstop for the Giants, Brian Sabean will have finally proven himself to be the Bay Area’s true Genius GM, if for no other reason that he’s able to find horrible players just as they’re about to turn it around. I personally don’t see it, but that doesn’t change the fact that, today, half the Giants’ wins are on the broad shoulders of Barry Bonds, and the other half are on the broad shoulders of Xeixi Perez.
Broad shoulders? Crap, I must have had my wide-screen TV zoomed in wrong. Click. There, that’s better. Now Xeixi’s shoulders are their usual, narrow width.
Tonight: Roger versus Barry in a battle of the aged, for the ages. Prediction: Barry will go 1 for 2, with a double, a strikeout, and a walk. At least, that’s what the Magic 8-Ball tells me.
