After watching two games at Petco Park, I have come to realize that it’s going to take some getting used to for the Padres. Huge outfield areas mean that there will be lots of ground-rule doubles and drop-in singles (depending on where the outfielders are playing), and it appears that homers will be at a minimum. Expect an influx of pitching talent and speedy hitters with gap power — and an outflux of slow, big boppers, especially if they’re outfielders.
The Padres will change to fit their stadium, and they’ll end up liking it. Eventually.
And I want to agree with what Marty said about Bip Roberts. I love Bip. He’s America’s Favorite Padre. But… the Giants don’t need a sideline reporter. He’s useless. Worse than useless, he just takes away time from Kruk and Kuip. Get him out of here.
One final Giant point: Why the Soviet-style clamps on the truth? All weekend they’ve been referring to the Sunday night game against the Padres as “radio only.” Uh, unless you get ESPN, in which case it’s a freakin’ nationally televised game featuring the Giants’ own Jon Miller as announcer! (Along with Joe Morgan, author of Moneyball.)
Come on, Giants. If we’re watching Fox Sports Net, we’ve got cable or satellite. That means we’ve got ESPN. Give us some credit — we know what a 5:00 game on a Sunday means. Pravda?
