The polls are out. Cal remains #4 in the country in both polls, but that doesn’t matter — Texas gained 23 points in the AP poll and 43 points in the coaches’ poll (thanks, Big 12 coaches!) which essentially means even Cal’s highest possible gain in the computer polls will not be enough to keep them at #4 in the BCS standings.
The end result: the consensus #4 team in the country will not fill any of the eight BCS bowl slots. Instead, those slots will be filled by teams 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 13, and 19. Also playing on New Year’s Day, due to conference affiliation deals, will be teams 8, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17, 20, and 27.
Playing on December 30 against #23? That’s right — team #4. (And congratulations to the mighty Pac-10 conference for failing to secure any New Year’s Day bowl slot for their second-place team.)
Who wants to bet that even if Cal drubs mighty Texas Tech, it’ll drop in the final rankings come January 5? And why not? Once the man’s down, why not get in a couple of extra kicks?
