Fighting the Fight Song

Posted by Jason Snell at 01:55 PM in Cal Football

Before I get into the aftermath of the (blessedly rain-free) Holiday Bowl drubbing, let me post something a little brighter. The New York Times ran a story yesterday about college fight songs, including Cal’s latest:

“I wasn’t into the call to violence,” [contest winner Aaron Alcala-Mosley] said. “Instead of annihilating Stanford, I thought I’d focus on the idea of Cal winning.” He studied fight song lyrics of other universities and noted they shared two characteristics: “A timelessness, and a cheesiness.” His entry, “California Triumph,” won hands down, and doesn’t lack for either.

Worth a read before it goes behind the Times’ pay-to-read firewall in five days.
