Number Nine

Posted by Jason Snell at 10:09 AM in Cal Football

And that’s your Cal Football season wrap-up: ranked No. 9 in both polls, ranked sixth by Jeff Sagarin’s crazy computer. It’s Cal’s highest end-of-season ranking since 1991, when they finished No. 7 in the coaches’ poll and No. 8 in the writers’ poll.

The national championship game proves an interesting point: you can’t really figure college football week to week, team to team. Because on one level, Cal got thumped by a Texas Tech team that was stifled by Oklahoma. But Cal had four shots to beat USC, at USC, and fell just slightly short after outplaying them the entire game. So what does that tell us? A whole lot of nothing, except that USC is better than everyone else, more or less. Of course, if Aaron Rodgers completes one of those passes, Auburn plays Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, and Cal plays Michigan in the Rose Bowl, and who knows what happens then?

Personally I’d rate the top ten this way: USC, Auburn, Utah, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisville, Cal, Georgia, Iowa, Boise State.
