You Know It’s Early February When…

Turned on ESPNnews at lunch today. I do that a lot. It gets me away from the computer screen for a half-hour or so. It provides a good background noise while I’m making lunch (other than, you know, the voices in my head…). And the channel, more often than not, manages to report sports news without the excesses and contrivances that plague its mothership station. (Although here is a tip from me, Philip Michaels, to Hot List host Brian Kenney: once you ask your interview subjects a question, it is probably a good practice to give them a chance to finish speaking before you blurt out your next inquiry. Who knows — perhaps they’d be able to answer whatever question you plan on asking next if they had more than 10 seconds to formulate an answer. I suspect even the kid who won Dream Job grasps this concept.)

Anyhow, here was the hot-breaking news stories being covered on ESPNnews as I enjoyed my plate of left-over spaghetti: an interview with Tony Grazini, the newly acquired quarterback for the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League followed by a second interview with Nextel Cup rookie of the year Kasey Kahne in anticipation of the Daytona 500 10 days hence.

To recap: that’s interviews on Arena Football and NASCAR races more than a week away. A sports fan wouldn’t even have to look at a calendar to know that we’re smack dab in February.

February of the year when the NHL finally decided to drive a stake into its own heart, anyway...

Can I say how sad it is that they killed the NHL and nobody seems to care?

I certainly don't.
