I can’t believe Jason hasn’t jumped all over this quote — which comes to us courtesy of Fire Jim Tracy — but then again, the thought of following this year’s Giants squad would drive me into seclusion as well. Anyhow, to the quote in question, following Friday night’s loss to St. Louis at the hands of a kerosene-equipped bullpen.
Manager Felipe Alou, who called it the “toughest loss of the year,” used five relievers, including three in the ninth inning. Before Friday, the bullpen was on a roll, surrendering one run in 22 innings, but it crashed quickly and decisively on a humid night before 46,200 at Busch Stadium.“We have some guys here who have been overworked,” Alou said, “whose arms are tired.”
Well, who overworked them, Felipe? A disloyal lieutenant of yours? Some manner of mischievious elf or wood sprite? Larry Krueger? Let’s turn to Chronicle baseball writer John Shea for some facts and figures.
Alou has gone to the bullpen 389 times this year, tops in the majors.
Ah, so it’s you who overworked the bullpen, Felipe. Got it. The passive voice was throwing me, you see.
On a not entirely unrelated note, I proposed a plan to Jason the other day that would considerably speed up Giants games: fans should pitch in to buy Felipe Alou a Segway. Valuable manhours are consumed each game when Felipe strolls out to the mound to bring in yet another pitcher from the bullpen. But with a Segway, Alou could ride out onto the field, signal for the right-hander or the southpaw, and then execute a nifty U-Turn all in one fluid motion. Given the number of pitching changes in your typical Giants game, I figure this would shave a half-hour, 45 minutes off of game times.
Also, no more running in from the bullpen for Giants pitchers at SBC Park. From now on, they will travel in tubes! Get the scientists working on the tube technology, chop-chop.
When I told Jason my plan, he sort of whimpered and went back to staring at the wall. Naturally, I took that as a form of assent.

Phil, what's the battery life of a Segway? I'm not sure it would last the entire game, given how many trips Felipe takes to the mound...
Perhaps he can do so in costume, as well:

Nothing gets the fans into the game like a good Segway, that's what I always say.
