For those of you — like me and Jason — who took special delight in a Yankees loss because of the delicious prospect of an epic George Steinbrenner meltdown, the Boss id denying us the satisfaction. Publicly at least.
I congratulate the Boston Red Sox on their great victory. I want to thank our loyal fans for their enormous support. Of course, I am disappointed because I wanted a championship for them and for our city. You can be assured, we will get to work and produce a great team next year.
Wow. That’s downright sportsmanlike. I’d compliment George Steinbrenner for being gracious in defeat, if I didn’t think he was going to spend the next week privately berating batboys and scoreboard operators.
The ESPN wire store I linked to up above includes a mention of Steinbrenner’s infamous apology after the Yankees lost the 1981 World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers. (Incidentally, that was the last time before this year that the Yankees were eliminated from the post-season at Yankee Stadium in two consecutive seasons, having lost to Kansas City at home in the ‘80 ALCS.)
I want to sincerely apologize to the people of New York and to the fans of the New York Yankees everywhere for the performance of the Yankee team in the World Series. I also want to assure you that we will be at work immediately to prepare for 1982.
If memory serves, Steinbrenner issued that apology while the Dodgers were still celebrating their win — a classless move that, understandably, didn’t sit well with the victors. If you ever want to enjoy a cruel laugh at The Boss’ expense, pick up True Blue: The Dramatic History of the Los Angeles Dodgers and flip to the section on the ‘81 series to get the Dodgers’ exact thoughts in regards to Steinbrenner.
