His Open Man, Just Like He Planned

Posted by Jason Snell at 11:33 AM in Football

If you haven’t seen the NFL Network commercial featuring Fountains of Wayne’s “All Kinds of Time,” go do so right now.

I admit, I’m a big fan of the band and the song. I’ve always thought it would make a perfect NFL-related montage. And here it is.

My favorite bit in the ad, other than the obligatory Dan Fouts and Jim Zorn (!) shots, is the shot of Archie Manning with two of his sons, followed immediately by shots of Peyton and Eli Manning behind center for the Colts and Giants.

IS THERE A LIST OF THE QUARTERBACKS APPEAING THE SPOT? GUESSING THEM ALL IS AN INTERESTING TRIVIA CHALLENGE EACH TIME IT IS IN. ABOUT THIRTY DIFFERENT QB'S IN THE SPOT.

They are:

* Dan Pastorini
* Fran Tarkenton (inexplicably in a Giants uniform, and not as a Viking)
* Johnny Unitas
* Terry Bradshaw
* Archie Manning
* Peyton Manning
* Eli "I Hear the Weather in San Diego Isn't All it's Cracked Up to Be" Manning
* Bryan Bartlet Starr
* Some Kansas City Chief who I can only assume to be Len Dawson
* Troy Aikman
* John Elway
* Doug Williams
* Dan Fouts
* Donovan McNabb
* Dan Marino
* Michael Vick
* Y.A. Tittle
* Tom Brady
* Joe Montana
* Phil Simms
* Steve Young
* Aikman, again
* Ken Stabler
* Starr, again
* A Dolphin quarterback who, judging by the youth and vigor of Don Shula, I would guess to be Bob Griese
* Jim Zorn
* A Bear QB I can only assume is Jim McMahon
* Joe Thiesman
* Byron Leftwich
* Jim Kelly
* Daunte Culpepper
* Jake Delhome
* inexplicably, Greg Landry
* Brian Sipe
* Ron Jaworski
* Steve McNair
* A guy I'm pretty certain is Norm van Brocklin
* Ben Roethlisberger
* Jim Hart
* Roger Staubach
* Brett Favre
* Len Dawson for sure this time
* Joe Willie Namath

In today's championship game, I saw this ad followed by "Stacy's Mom" in a Dr. Pepper commercial. Talk about a commercial breakthrough for FoW!

It's not Norm van Brockin, it's Roman Gabriel.
