Thank you, Phil, for keeping the news about how freedom is slavery alive and well on Idiots Write About Sports.
I was in Orange County this weekend and found a collector’s item — a misprinted plastic cup that said, “Anaheim Angels — 2002 World Series Champions.” How odd. This cup makes no reference to the Angels’ ancestral home of Los Angeles, and misunderstands the fact that the final two “games” of the 2002 World Series were meaningless exhibitions to placate the distraught Ana— er, Los Angeles crowd.
Yup, definitely a collectors’ item.
Shame about how it ended up being crushed into little pieces.

The Angels were actually named Los Angeles Angels back in 1903 when they began as a Pacific Coast League franchise.
The Angels expansion team was brought to LA in 1961 specifically to act as a rival team to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
It seems a shame you need to bag on the name Anaheim, since it has only existed since Michael Eisner's Disney bought they team in 97 and selfishly renamed it Anaheim for locale recognition - close to Disneyland.
Moreno is simply trying to restore the original name - and attract more Los Angelenos to games, although they sell out so often, who knows if there is room.
It's nice to know that there is an alternative to the Dodgers, a team with new managers, owners and players every couple of years since O'Malley sold them. (a la Long, Dye, Tejada, Mulder, Hudson...) They must have received inspiration from Billy Beane. And how are those Giants doing without Bonds, eh?
The Dodgers franchise is crap, the stadium is crumbling and the fans are surly, disrespectful and mean (similar to Oakland.)
Just some insight from someone willing to drive over an hour to see the Angels - lenticular cup, in hand.
Good luck in the race for the pennant. Although the sweep still haunts me be honest and admit, whichever team takes it, they fought each other damn hard to deserve it.
Yes, as Arte Moreno told me just a few moments ago, "Freedom is Slavery." And so I have finally learned to love the Angels. We have always been part of Los Angeles. We have always been at war with Oceania.
By the way, I'm a Giants fan, jackass.
