So the 2005 version of the BCS standings came out today, and whaddaya know? It’s still a joke.
Notre Dame, which almost defeated #1 USC, is ranked sixteenth. Even wackier, apparently Mack Brown told the coaches to drop Notre Dame this week, because they’ve fallen from ninth to 12th after their almost-win versus the top team in the country. The Crazy Old People — er, Harris — poll dropped them from eighth to 11th. Whaa?
Meanwhile, as ESPN’s Pat Forde points out, the computer rankings (which by BCS rule can not take into account margin of victory/loss) are even nuttier:
The Colley Matrix, Anderson & Hester and the other computer wizards can’t factor in how close Notre Dame came to winning that game. The pollsters could and should. As dumb as the polls are, it’s the computer rankings that kill Notre Dame.
The BCS is a joke. It will be less of a joke next year, if only because after this year’s desecration of the Rose Bowl, they’ll add a proper championship bowl and add two more teams to the mix.
Yes, I think there should be an official NCAA football playoff. But barring that? Give me the old bowl system. It’s better than this fiasco.

Well, this Hokie ('94) is very happy with the BCS this week. Mind you, I know nothing about its crazy illogic. I just like being able to go around saying, "We're Number Three!"
"I just like being able to go around saying, 'We're Number Three!'"
Funny, but Auburn fans found that to be of little comfort last year.
