A year ago at this time, Jason and I — well, mostly Jason — were painstakingly counting down the moments until Cal’s eventual screwing. There will be no such palace intrigues in advance of the 2 p.m. PT reveal of the BCS Bowl assignments — Cal is most likely headed to the Las Vegas Bowl, unless the BCS pooh-bahs break with tradition and actually recognize the accomplishments of a West Coast team (the Mighty Ducks of Oregon, in this instance). So unlike last year, the only thing that the BCS results can hand Cal is a pleasant surprise (as in, an unexpected bid to the Sun Bowl, should Oregon sneak in as a BCS at-large team). In a sense, it’s nice to know where you’re headed and that the only unexpected turn of events will be a happy one.
Unless Mack Brown calls up the Las Vegas Bowl and begs them to offer their bowl spot to some other team. And I wouldn’t put it past him.
