Not So Big Game?

Posted by Jason Snell at 01:01 PM in Cal Football

The Chronicle reports that with the advent of the new Stanford Stadium, the days of Big Game tickets being allotted to the season-ticket holders of both schools may be over.

In the past, both Stanford and Cal have sold season-ticket packages that included a ticket to the Big Game even if it was in the opposing stadium. That clearly will no longer be possible given the limited seating that could be available at Stanford.

I’ve got mixed emotions about this one. On one hand, I’m a bit sad if I don’t have the opportunity to go to Stanford to see the Big Game when I want to. On the other hand, I’m sort of excited about not having to pay for an away Big Game ticket as a part of my season tickets, since one of the main reasons I schlep all the way down to Stanford at all is because I’ve already paid for the freakin’ tickets.

In reality what’s going to happen is, big-donor Cal people (and I might technically be one of those — that’s a soap opera for another day) will probably either get Big Game tickets or the option to buy them, but that the rest of the fans will be left on the short end of the stick. Of course, if they handle the Big Game like they handle Bowl games, the people who eschew the Cal ticket office and just buy tickets from Stanford will end up with better seats, while I’ll be sitting in one of those 10,000 crappy “portable seats” at Stanford.

Speaking about the Cal ticket office...

Do you think it's a good idea to get ticket for the season opener at Tennesee from the Cal ticket office?

I think I want to go to Tennesee this year. I've never been in that part of the country before.

Well I for one hope to be able to get tickets to the Big Game.

I suspect that they're fooling themselves that they'll only have 3000 seats to sell (plus 10K temporary). Even this past year Cal only had 40K season ticket holders. Assuming Stanford could match that (I doubt it), that would still leave 10K fixed plus 10K temporary. Particularly once one assumes it will become optional for Cal season ticket holders to purchase tickets, I suspect most of the 40K ticket holders who want them (say 25K) will be able to get them.
