Jeff Kent to Cal: How Hath My Life Offended Thee?

Posted by Philip Michaels at 05:47 PM in Baseball

So while we’re on the subject of Evans Diamond and the games contested there, one of the nicer touches in the stadium is just beyond the left field wall. There, Cal has hung several banners commemorating memorable players from past teams. Fans of current Major League Baseball will recognize Xavier Nady and Connor Jackson among the honorees.

But looking at the banners, I couldn’t help but notice that another current Major Leaguer hasn’t been given the Maoist portrait treatment. Where, for the love of Jackie Jensen is the banner for the Bellflower Cowboy, Jeffrey Franklin Kent?

The way I figure it, one of four things explains Kent’s absence from Cal’s Heroes of the Revolution display:

A. You have to reach some level of achievement — All-American status, College World Series appearances, or the like — that Kent simply hasn’t reached.
B. You have to go to Cal for a certain number of years, and maybe Kent didn’t do that.
C. I know this is a shocking notion, but maybe Kent and someone affiliated the University don’t see eye-to-eye about something…
D. In my sunstroked condition, I just didn’t see a banner for Kent.

(D) seems unlikely. (C) seems altogether too likely. I have no idea about the likelihood of (A) or (B). So if someone out there with more knowledge about the Cal baseball program would care to enlighten me, I’d be most appreciative.

Maybe they figured that since Kent decided to donate his money to Cal's women's sports programs instead of the men's, he deserves a banner on the softball field, instead.

Phil,
Not to be the Spelling Nazi or anything, but check both your link and the picture you've posted, then look at your post. CoJack's name only has one "n" in it. I've been watching that physically beautiful, athletically gifted young man quite closely all season. Wonderful hitter, improving first basemen, incredible hottie. What more could you ask?
