Today Oregon State beat Oregon, giving Oregon State three Pac-10 losses. This means that Cal must beat Stanford in order to avoid the tie with Oregon State, at which point the Holiday Bowl would get to choose from Cal or OSU.
In weirder news, Texas and Boston College lost. According to BCS guru Jerry Palm, this means:
The Texas and BC losses are just two of the many things that need to happen for Cal to creep back into the top 14 and BCS eligibility. The Bears are currently 19th, but figure to move ahead of both Texas and BC. Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Rutgers and Boise St could still fall behind Cal, but the Bears could also get jumped by Tennessee, Wake Forest and/or Nebraska.
Yeah, you read that right. If things fall the right way for Cal, including USC winning out and a few other teams losing, Cal actually could back into the Rose Bowl.
Ow, that Arizona loss stings.
(Update: The Crazy Scenario is still alive. So pull for Nebraska beats Oklahoma by a little, Georgia Tech over Wake, Florida over Arkansas. If all that happens, Cal might end up at No. 14 in the BCS. And at that point, Rose Bowl Insanity begins.)
(Update 2: Okay, maybe not. Jerry Palm now points out that there’s no way Cal’s going to get all the way up to 14 in the BCS by next week. Go Bears, Beat Stanford, and San Diego is lovely this time of year!)
(Update 3 — The Ken Crawford-Mandated Update: I bought my Holiday Bowl tickets today. Take that, Kevin!)

which is what i was saying when everyone was delusionally saying "nothing changed" after the loss.
Everything changed. Dammit.
Yeah, of course everything changed. But there are times to recognize it and times to focus on the task at hand. After the Arizona loss the USC game was immediately in front of the team. If Cal could win that game, nothing changed. There was no reason at the time to think about anything else.
Now, yeah, Arizona changed everything.
Go Crazy Scenario!
"San Diego is lovely this time of year!"
Indeed it is. And do feel free to drop by and say hello whilst you're in town, sir.
How about me, Steve? Can I drop in? Or have you passed out my 8x10 to the local Neighborhood Watch?
Where's the Update #3 saying it's official, you can buy your plane tickets to San Diego now!
Wow, I didn't know I could "mandate" an update! :)
"How about me, Steve? Can I drop in?"
Oh, sure, what the hell. The more the merrier, I say. Even though I'm pretty sure you've made some or other disparaging and hurtful comment towards me recently that, by rights, should be cause for semi-permanent barring from my household. But in keeping with the Jesus-ey December theme, I forgive you.
If you're lucky, there will even be some special edition Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale left over for your consideration. That's somewhat unlikely, though, unless the bowl committee reschedules the game for tomorrow afternoon.
